Director Nishikant Kamath, who has earlier directed National Award winning films like Dombivili Fast (in Marathi), comes up with a realistic and evocative film Mumbai Meri Jaan. Kamath tries to show the tragedy of Mumbai and the impact of the 2006 train blasts on the lives of the people. The movie tries to deal with the aspect of differences in various points of view from which people looked at the entire incident from an IT professional, journalist to a tea vendor and from a Hindu fanatic to a cop. Mumbai Meri Jaan is a kind of movie which will certainly evoke a lot many questions.

The movie revolves around six characters which run parallely and are related to the incident somehow. Nikhil Agarwal (Madhavan) - a patriotic corporate guy, ASI Patil (Paresh Rawal) – a corrupt but practical cop, Suresh (Kay Kay Menon) – an unemployed frustrated youth, Thomas (Irrfan) – a roadside tea/coffee vendor and Rupali (Soha Ali Khan) – a TV news reporter. Evryone was quite happy and busy in their own lives, when a train blast completely changed their lives and perceptions.

Madhavan is saved from the bomb blasts, as he doesn't board his usual train compartment. But his friend loses his hand. The sight of the blast traumatise him badly and local trains scares him so much that he thinks of leaving the country. Kay Kay Menon's belief that muslims are responsible for all this gets futher strengthened after the blasts. Paresh Rawal's take that nothing can change with this system continues as he approaches the day of his retirement. Irrfan's anger towards the society pushes him to create a series of hoax bomb calls throughout the city after the bomb blasts.

Soha Ali Khan, too, tastes the trauma of affected people when she loses her own fiance in the blasts. And, her own TV channel makes a story on her case. It is then that she realizes how and what does a person go through after losing a near and dear ones and how different is it from telecasting such stories from facing it. All of them try tackling their issues on their own. And by the end of it, all of them move on in life and the film shows a hope, that despite everything, humanity prevails.

To back a good script there are brilliant performances by Paresh Rawal and Irrfan Khan. Playing a rookie cop,Vijay Maurya also does a good job. Madhavan is superb as a techie terrorized by the blasts. His character cries for an urgency to stop brain drain from our country. Kay Kay Menon delivers an excellent perfomance as a fanatic. Soha Ali Khan's role highlighting the insensitivity of the TRP-hungry media, is of great relevance and she plays her part well.

Mumbai Meri Jaan without any songs expresses more than words. Armed with superb direction and cinematography, Nishikant Kamat continues with his realistic approach. The director deserves an appreciation for mature and sensitive handling of a serious subject. Though the movie looks slow at times but the brilliant perfomances overcome all the flaws of the film. The best part of the movie is that it is not judgemental. The movie is very good if you want to see something realistic yet nice. I recommend everyone- MUST WATCH; and think over it.
